International Directors Reel Festival
New York City - August 2009

The 1st Annual International Director’s Reel Festival is calling for entries.
An extended submission window is giving everyone time to put together their reels.
Deadline is May 1, 2009

What you must do

You may take any scene, scenes or portion thereof, of any of your work(s) and make your Director’s Reel.  You may even choose to shoot new scenes that you feel passionate about to produce your Director’s Reel.  Your reel may contain as many scenes that you feel are necessary to represent your strength(s) as a director.  You may choose to have various examples such as action, drama, comedy, horror, children based themes and commercials within your reel, to show your diversity/range.  Or you can stick to just one medium.  [It does not matter if you have shot on Film or Video.  You merely need to transfer/edit the footage to make your Director’s Reel]

Requirements

All submissions must have the Director’s name (title card) at the beginning, end or both on their Director’s Reel.  Your title card can be over black or over picture.  Though it is not mandatory, you should have your contact information (phone or e-mail) visually depicted on the screen contents of your reel.

Example:
Jane March
Director’s Reel
(555) 123-4567

As mentioned above, your work can consist of any *genre but the total run time should not be any longer than five (5) minutes in length.

For those of you who are extremely passionate about your reel but have gone over the 5 minute allotted run time, you may pay an additional entry fee to have the work included. However, no reel longer than 7 minutes will be accepted.  Agents, Managers and Producers will want to see your work in a collapsed period of time.  Remember, it is important to showcase your best work.  [Title cards do not effect your run time.  You are allowed 7 minutes of visual footage]

Foreign Submissions

It is recommended that you subtitle or voice-over your reel in English. However, this is not a requirement.  You may send your reel in its original language if you so choose.

Submission and Screening Format

All reels must be in the form of a DVD. DO NOT protect or encrypt your reel from being copied or duplicated.  All reels will need to be digitized/copied into our database to create Master Reels for video projection.

Each Master Reel will consist of roughly 18-20 Directors’ Reels making a feature run time of about 100-120 minutes.  Shows run every 2 hours with a 30 minute intermission.

There will be as many screenings as necessary to display all works submitted.
Reels are not returned.

Dates & Show times

Roughly 3 months before the festival, the dates, times and locations of the screenings will be available on this website.  Each show time will also list the names of the Directors for the respective shows.  Directors that will be attending their particular screening are admitted for free.  You will need to present your drivers license to verify who you are at the box office.

The 31

Like any festival event, there will be a contest to judge and determine the best Directors’ Reels.  After all reels have been screened, the top 31 Directors, from around the world, will be given a private screening at the end of the festival and will also have their reels loaded on this website, which can be reviewed by professionals across the globe.  These reels will remain on this site for 9 months after the festival.

The top 5 student reels will show at the beginning of ‘The 31’ premier and also have their reels posted on this website.

All tickets are $10.  Ticket purchasing will be available 4 months before the festival.  50% of all ticket sales are being donated to various environmental conservation and animal protection programs.

Agents-Managers-Producers-Production Company Reps

There is no cost for you to attend this festival.  We also understand that your time and privacy is paramount and we will not publish/broadcast your name or the dates and times that you will be attending.  This will allow you a working/screening environment free of interruption.  There will be directors and general public viewers at all shows but you will remain anonymous and be perceived as just another viewer.

Roughly 3 months prior to the festival you will have access, via this website, to the dates, times and theater locations of all screenings.
We suggest that you book, free of charge, the number of seats that you will need in advance, so that we can ensure there are ample seating arrangements.  To ensure that you are a credited agent with a recognized institution, you will need to register with us so we can confirm who you are and ensure there is no abuse of this system.
